What stays on your iPhone
Lighter keeps these on your iPhone, in the app’s own storage:
- What you write and add: your answers when you close the day, journal pages, photos you add, gratitude jar notes, Today & Someday items, and, with Lighter Pro, tags and bookmarks.
- Your settings, such as reminder times, App lock and Always dim.
- A few small markers that help the app choose its words, such as whether you’ve said this evening feels heavy.
- If you stop partway through closing the day, what you’d started, so you can pick it up later that evening.
They’re stored with iOS Data Protection, which encrypts them on your iPhone. Like other apps’ data, they’re included in your iPhone’s own backup (iCloud Backup or a backup on your computer).
iCloud sync
iCloud sync is off unless you turn it on in Settings. When it’s on, Lighter keeps your entries in step across your devices through your private iCloud database (Apple’s CloudKit).
- Everything Lighter writes about you, photos included, is encrypted on your iPhone before it’s sent. We can’t read it.
- Whether Apple can read it depends on your iCloud settings. With standard data protection, the default, Apple keeps the keys secured in its data centers so it can help you recover your data. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud (Settings ▸ your name ▸ iCloud), only your own devices hold the keys, and Apple can’t read it either.
- iCloud still sees a random identifier for each item and the details it needs to sync, such as when something changed.
- Sync isn’t a backup. Deleting something deletes it on every device and in iCloud. Export a copy if you want one to keep.
- Your iCloud account itself is covered by Apple’s terms and privacy policy.
Photos and the camera
- When you add a photo from your library, you choose it in Apple’s photo picker. Lighter receives only the photos you pick, never your library.
- If you take a photo in Lighter, it uses the camera only when you ask, and only after you allow it.
- Photos you add are stored with your entries, and synced with them if iCloud sync is on.
App lock
App lock is off unless you turn it on. It uses Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode through iOS. Lighter never sees your face, fingerprint or passcode; iOS only tells it whether you were recognised.
Reminders
Reminders are optional. They’re scheduled on your iPhone for the times you choose, and nothing about them leaves your phone.
Exporting and sharing
When you export your journal or share an entry, Lighter makes the file on your iPhone and hands it to the share sheet. It goes only where you send it.
Lighter Pro
Lighter Pro is bought through Apple’s App Store. Apple handles the payment, and we never see your payment details. Lighter keeps a note in your iPhone’s Keychain that you own Pro, so it’s still there if you reinstall. Apple sends us sales reports that don’t identify you.
The widget
The widget shows a line from Lighter’s own collection. It reads nothing you’ve written.
What we don’t do
- No accounts and no sign-in.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and no third-party code.
- We don’t sell or share your information, because we don’t have it.
- No location, contacts or Health data.
- Nothing reads or analyses what you write: not us, and not any service.
- Lighter has no server of its own to send anything to.
Crash reports from Apple
If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings (Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Analytics & Improvements), Apple may send us crash reports and diagnostics about the app. They’re about the app’s code, not what you write, and we use them only to fix problems. You can turn this off there.
If you write to us
If you email us, we’ll see your email address and what you send, and use them only to reply. Ask, and we’ll delete them.
This website
This website, lighter.vcodextech.com, sets no cookies, runs no analytics or tracking, and loads nothing from anywhere else. It’s hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives the technical details your browser sends with each request, such as your IP address and the address of the page, and uses them to deliver the page and to protect the site.
Children
Lighter doesn’t collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Your choices
- Delete an entry, a photo or a note in the app.
- Export a copy of your journal whenever you like.
- Delete Lighter to remove what it keeps on your iPhone. The one thing that stays is the note in your Keychain that you own Lighter Pro, so a reinstall still has it.
- Remove what Lighter keeps in iCloud from your iCloud storage, in the Settings app.
We hold none of your information, so there’s nothing for us to give you, correct or delete, except emails you’ve sent us. Wherever you live, if you have a question about your rights, write to us.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects what happens to your information, we’ll say so in the app’s update notes first.
